How to Promote a Pawn Online

One of the chess lessons we can learn online is promoting or graduating pawns into major pieces like a queen, rook, bishop, or knight. This is sometimes called pawn conversion. It is one of the powerful moves we can do with a pawn online.

Promoting a pawn online should be done with careful planning. We should allot at least 2 to 3 pawns for promotion. We use other pawns (5 of them) for other purposes on the online board, like meeting or blocking other pawns, as a backup support in an encounter, or for guarding the king. We reserve 3 pawns for promotion. In the middle of the assaults and encounters, it is realistic to devote 2 to 3 pawns for the task of graduating and being promoted.

Promoting a pawn means we move it forward on turns until it reaches the last row inside the enemy territory. Any square along this last row is a promoting or graduating square. Any square here that our pawn steps on automatically promotes it online into a major piece. We don't have to fuss over getting a piece and replacing it with our pawn. The computer software on the site does this for us. All we have to bother with is get the pawn to the row.

If we are able to promote 3 pawns then we get 3 extra major pieces at the near end of the game. This means tremendous empowerment at the game's conclusion when possessing major pieces is crucial. If we see the wisdom in promoting a pawn online we should plan it way ahead of time. Right at the start of a game we devote 2 to 3 pieces for this purpose.

It will also be wise to have two pawns each side of our board as reserves for promotion. Concentrate on a central attack to lure the enemy into a central defense while we gradually advance our pawns for promotion unnoticed.

Online or otherwise, most successful promotions are done from the board's sides. It is also better to backup pawns for promotion with a rook from a distance. Just have the rook right behind them for stand-by backup. This way we are able to use our rook for other purposes as well.

Promoting a pawn online is a strategy we should plan right at the start. We should learn to do it each game by devoting some pawns for this purpose. For some reason promoting pawns online is often less obvious than on traditional boards.
